The Shepherds were watching their flocks by night when they saw an angel appear to them and a Star to follow. I don’t know that we stop to think about how awesome an experience this must have been for these shepherds. The angel came to them very unexpectedly! That is exactly the fact that stands out to me as a lesson we can derive from their story.
What happened that night in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago was a great miracle. It was a defining moment in all of history for mankind. Something we celebrate to this day and will for years to come.
The Shepherds however were not looking for anything miraculous that night. They were very simply “tending to their work” everyday, mundane, lowly position of shepherding. We can only imagine the reaction of these humble shepherds. God had chosen them for a great assignment and as a shining example.
Is there some “big thing” you are watching and waiting to happen in your life? The lesson we can all learn from these shepherds is this…keep your feet on the ground and your eyes on the flock. We must be found simply doing what we ought to be doing. God is going to do the big things and the miracles. He is, was, and always has been faithful! But instead of looking and waiting for whatever it is your expecting may happen, work diligently, love extraordinarily, give sacrificially, pray continually, forgive immeasurably, and trust God unconditionally. He is able to do the miraculous when we least expect it such as the story of the Shepherds. (Luke 2)
