Maybe at first glance that title does not make sense to you. I’ll admit it’s a play on words that hopefully will make sense as you read….
You ever had a florescent light with one bulb just a flickerin’. Well, I have one in my laundry room right now and most of the time only one side of the light is working and the other bulb is completely dull. It is difficult to see, but one light is after all better than none!
What is shocking to imagine is that most of us live our Christian lives in this very same manner – “half lit”. I guess it is better than no light at all, right? I’m not so sure. Maybe giving just some of ourselves to the work of the Gospel of Christ is not enough. In fact, this could present more of a hindrance than help to the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom.
There is no clarity in being only half sold out to Jesus, no true distinction from the world or commitment to whole-heartedly follow Christ. We will no doubt muddy the water of the picture of who Christ truly is if we do not with all we have seek to mirror His image.
Jesus prayed in John 17 that we would be “in the world, but not of the world”. I wish I understood all of what he might have meant with what seems on first glance to be a simplistic prayer. Being in the world and not of the world is all but simplistic to follow in the least.
Matthew 5:16 says:
In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
