Romancing the Stone
by Christy Snell ~ September 2007
My heart had made a fortress
A wall none could detect
Only I was more aware of it
As emotions I’d reject
God has a simple kindness
A way of breaking through
Amidst our stubborn heart of strife
As He makes ALL things new
The heart can become stony
A garden of collected hurts
Bankrupt and desolate the soul
Where bitterness occurs
Does it not become so much easier
Just to leave things as they were
Not so our loving Father
He gives great care and thought
How to love us through the pain
That other’s hands have wrought
I’m not sure how God is able
To reach through all the weeds
And leave those flowers blooming
That have bloomed in spite the freeze
You’d think we would come to know ourselves
The way we ought to know
And somehow begin to play a part
In helping our hearts grow
It seems we are the greatest hindrance
While that should not be so
I think it rather unusual
Maybe even strange
Our hearts can love so deeply
Yet experience so much pain
I find the greatest comfort
Strength that I have not known
In trusting Christ as captain
Of this weary soul
You may have understanding
Beyond mine I am sure
Or maybe your hurts grow deeper
Than you have dared to look
The soul, our hearts can be like stone
Yet within each passing hour
The master plan of our Father
Is tending each precious flower
