Jesus is Coming!

In 1988, I was 11 years old. I remember hearing my parents talking about a man named Edgar Whisenant who gave 88 reasons why Jesus was coming back in September of that year. That was an eerie feeling. My family was very skeptical, needless to say. After all, didn’t Jesus say that no man knows the hour or the day? (Matthew 25:13) But … what if he was right?
Obviously he was wrong, and I’ve since found out that there have been many false prophets who have attempted to predict the date and have been incorrect. But I have to admit that I somewhat admire their zeal for His return. Sometimes I feel we Christians have all but forgotten that Christ has promised His return. I work at a ministry, volunteer at my church, live life with my Christian family members, and I almost never hear anyone talk of Christ’s coming.
I have been reminded lately that because we do not know the hour nor the day, we could be taken from our place on this earth within the next few moments—in the twinkling of an eye (1 Corinthians 15:52). And yet, I go on living my life as if I had all the time in the world.
Christ is not dead! He is not just a character in a fairytale story or a nice person that used to live. He is alive! He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords, and He is going to come back for us someday to take us to a place—a real place—called heaven. It’s not just some Hollywood fiction story with special effects.
Today, why don’t you begin looking for Christ in the clouds? Listen to Him in the thunder as it rains. Feel the tension of His creation, of which the Bible says, “it groans in anticipation of His return” (Romans 8:22). If the creation hopes and yearns for His coming, then why don’t we? Have we gotten too attached to our surroundings and our circumstances? Have we gotten too used to this world or do we remember that we are aliens and strangers to this place (1 Peter 2:11)?
Today, look for Jesus. Ask Him to give you a yearning in your heart for His coming. Heaven knows … it won’t be long.
