Receiving God's Love
by Debbie Nelson ~ September 2006 ~ 1 John 4:19
Some days I feel deficient of love for Christ. I wonder where has my love for Jesus gone? When I’m in this place, I must be careful for I am at risk of condemnation from the enemy. My need then becomes my defense: love! 1 John 4:19 says "We love because He first loved us." I realize my love is lacking, because I have not first received His love, so I make my prayer: “Jesus, open my eyes to see Your love for me!”
I believe the greatest thing we can do is receive the love of God. Because He already loves us, it’s really just a matter of receiving His love. I want to commit to making this a goal: to know and receive God’s love! I want to focus on spending moments with Him just reflecting on His love, remembering The Cross and His faithfulness. I know if I make this my devotion, eventually I will never feel deficient of love for Him again.
There is such a wonderful desire and ease to love those around us when we are confident in God’s love for us. When I try to conjure up love for others, often it is obvious that it is not real, and instead of strengthening the relationship it weakens it. There is a great blessing in knowing God’s love. For not only does it benefit our own spirits, but also those around us will feel a fresh wind of love blow through their own spirits, when it is overflowing in us.
What a joy to us, to our friends, to our families and a witness to our neighbors; when we are connected to the vine of Jesus’ love. “Oh, Jesus open our eyes to see Your love for us more!”
